Transportation is one of the most important parts of a private journey in West Sumatra and Sumatra. The experience is shaped not only by where you go, but also by how the route is connected. Roads, vehicles, ferries, boats, airports, luggage, and timing all need to work together.

Private vehicle travel

Most West Sumatra journeys use a private vehicle with driver. This gives more comfort and flexibility than fixed group transport. You can stop for meals, photos, markets, viewpoints, or rest breaks when the route allows.

Travel times

Travel times in Sumatra should be treated carefully. Map estimates may not reflect real conditions. Roads can be winding, traffic can slow the day, rain can affect movement, and scenic stops may take longer than expected.

For private journeys, we prefer realistic timing over optimistic promises. A route that looks slightly slower on paper often feels much better during the actual trip.

Airport transfers

Padang is the main gateway for most West Sumatra journeys. Airport transfers should be planned around your arrival time, luggage, hotel location, and next day’s route.

If you arrive late after a long flight, it is usually better to rest in Padang before continuing inland. Starting a long highland transfer when tired can weaken the first day of the journey.

Mentawai transfers

Mentawai requires special transportation planning. The route may include airport arrival, Padang overnight, port transfer, ferry or boat crossing, and another island transfer after arrival.

Surfboards and large luggage should be discussed early. Board bags can affect vehicle size, port handling, and transfer timing. For Mentawai, the whole chain of travel matters, not only the ferry.

Overland routes

Longer Sumatra overland journeys require more careful pacing. A private overland route may include several long road days, but these should be balanced with slower days.

A good overland plan considers:

• Road conditions
• Accommodation location
• Meal stops
• Scenic breaks
• Flight timing at the end of the route

Trying to cover too much can make the journey tiring. The best overland routes are realistic, not overloaded.

Luggage

For Mentawai or boat-based travel, keep important items protected and accessible. Electronics, documents, medication, and valuables should be packed carefully.

Flexibility on the road
